The Building Division is charged with ensuring that structures built within the City limits of Destin meet all applicable codes.

It is the division's responsibility to assure uniform construction practices related to the public health, safety and welfare. This is accomplished through continual training and certification of the department staff members.

Building staff members also perform plan reviews and provide technical assistance and determinations regarding building code issues.

Building permits, local business tax receipts (aka business licenses), and contractor registrations are also issued through the department.

The Chief Building Official oversees the Building Division's operations and supervises the Building Inspectors, Permit/License Administrator and one Permit Clerks. 

APPLICATIONS AND PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR: any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any required impact resistant coverings, electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the Florida Building Code.  This includes non- habitable structures: accessory buildings, driveways, walkways, retaining walls, fences, bulkheads, seawalls, marine docks/piers, boardwalks, beach dune walkovers, clearing and grading, etc.
