Solid Waste Collection & Recycling
Solid waste collection and recycling in the City of Destin is mandatory and is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure this service is established. The city contracts with Waste Management, Inc., for solid waste services. This includes all residential and commercial trash and garbage, and all other refuse within the city limits of Destin. All waste items (household garbage, recycling, bulk waste and yard waste) must be placed curbside in front of each property, not across the street or combined with a neighbor's waste, in order for it to be picked up.
|Rate Change: Beginning October 1, 2021, residential solid waste/recycling rates will increase slightly based on the Consumer Price Index. Below are the new rates and increase amounts:
Residential solid waste/recycling: $68.35/quarter
Senior (discount) solid waste/recycling: $55.88/quarter
Residential Curbside Pickup
Most household items can be picked up curbside in Destin by Waste Management, Inc. Categories for this service include solid waste (household garbage), recycling, yard waste and bulk waste.
Is your cart damaged or does it need to be replaced? Request a new cart. Special needs customers (handicapped and elderly) may request a smaller, 64-gallon garbage and recycling cart. Call (850) 862-7141 for assistance.
City residents, where there are no more than two persons residing in the dwelling and at least one of those two is age 65 or over by October 1 of the current year, may apply for a senior discount directly with Waste Management, Inc. Residents who meet certain income criteria may qualify for an exemption from payment for garbage service. View the application and qualifications here.
Bulk items such as chairs, couches, furniture, white goods, etc. (refrigerant, gas tanks, etc. must be removed) will be picked up on Mondays and is limited to six (6) cubic yards or 75 lbs. per pickup weekly. Items not accepted: tires, batteries, paints, oils, construction debris, chemicals of any kind, Freon, rocks, sand, gravel, dirt, logs, carpet, hazardous or medical waste.
Recyclable items must be placed in the 96-gallon recycling cart. Do not bag the items. Recycling instructions are printed on the yellow lid. Pickup is every Tuesday. The recycling cart must be placed curbside next to the regular garbage cart.
Hazardous waste disposal is NOT a curbside service. It is managed by Okaloosa County. Hazardous items include car batteries, paint, oil, computers, etc. Residents can drop these items off for free in Fort Walton Beach at 80 Ready Ave every Tuesday thru Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
