Understanding the State of Destin's Electric Utility Service

The city council recently voted to exercise its right to purchase the electric distribution system from Gulf Power, our current franchised provider. This comes after years of negotiating with Gulf Power on franchise terms. What this means is that the city now has the ability to purchase the distribution system if it is deemed a truly viable option. It is also important to understand that the city council is continuing to try to negotiate a fair franchise agreement with Gulf Power that will benefit the citizens of Destin. Currently, Destin customers pay one of the highest electric power rates in Florida. There will be much more to come on this topic as it develops.

Councilman Parker Destin sums up the city's electrical franchise with Gulf Power and the city's intent regarding purchase options and franchise negotiations in this six-minute video. It is worth your time to watch. The video will play below.
