On a recent trip to the Tampa Bay area I drove up to an eye catching pedestrian crosswalk. There was no way to miss it. The City of Tampa added a crosswalk near the Port of Tampa’s Channelside Plaza. This crosswalk has yellow flashing lights imbedded in roadway, flashing pedestrian crossing signs and crosswalk activation posts. The way it works is if a pedestrian walks between the posts at the crosswalk it automatically activates the flashing lights imbedded in the roadway and signs. That way vehicles have a unmistakable signal that a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. I did some research and found that it’s made by company called LightGuard Systems and has been used in major cities in Florida such as Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Miami and many others.
